Welcome back to SCIS. At SCIS we believe that what you learn outside the classroom is as much a part of your school experience as what you learn within the classroom. With this in mind we try to offer a range of after school co-curricular activities which students will find both rewarding and challenging. We encourage all students to become involved. Please take a few minutes to check the following list to see what is available in Quarter One. Q1 Activities Current

The Green Clad Faithful
Alfred Tennyson:
I am a part of all that I have met.
If you watched any of the recent winter Olympic coverage (especially hockey) you understand how sport can play a large role in the development of a sense of togetherness. In fact in the book ‘Invictus’ author John Carlin shows how Nelson Mandela used sport to redefine a nation – when asked if his support of rugby was a ‘political calculation’ Mandela responded ‘no, it’s a human calculation’. It is along those lines that we attempt to infuse our sporting events at SCIS with the same sense of community — showing our Dragon Pride leads to a group of people who help both define what it means to be an SCIS Pudong Dragon and maybe more importantly who enjoy being with each other and having a lot of fun.
It all begins with a ‘green and jeans’ day. On game day students/staff and parents alike are asked/permitted to show support for our squads by dressing in the school color. As the school halls become ‘green clad’ a rising sense of camaraderie and common purpose takes effect. This attitude is later put to music as a motley (in the best sense of the word) band of ‘noisemakers’ descend upon the sporting arena loudly proclaiming their DRAGON allegiance through various musical instruments. Mozart it is not – but it does raise spirits and infuse players and spectators alike with “Dragon-ness”.
The stands are not filled with only students – @ SCIS our small staff understand how a connected community can affect attitudes and behaviors even into the day to day life of a classroom – they also just like to support our students -and they arrive at games en masse. With the dedicated work of our Booster club executives – who take the time to make individual contact with all parents of students involved in the activity – we have a large assortment of parents and well wishers at the game to enjoy the action and join the community.
50-50 drawings, a teacher ‘play by play’ announcer, a half-time dance performance and some odds and ends technological goodies add to the fun evenings worth of entertainment for all.
Just as in Olympic Hockey or world cup rugby, this support can have a positive impact on team and player performance. One shining example of this is the Men’s Dragon Basketball team that recently won the SISAC City Championship. As Sandra Day O’Conner once said “We don’t accomplish anything in this world alone … “ thusly this championship belongs as much to the green clad faithful as it does to the team.

The Varsity Dragon Boys currently have a 6 & 2 record in league play. They have beaten everyone on our side of the river and look forward to the season ending city tournaments. Play after the break was highlighted by a comeback win over SAS Pd where your Dragons were down by 12 points with only 80 seconds to play and ended up winning by 10. It was a frenetic end to a basketball game – and a lot of fun. Your SCIS Dragons feel very privileged to have been invited to play in the APAC (Asia Pacific Athletic Conference) Super 12 basketball tournament next week beginning on January 28th @ SAS Pudong. This tournament will have some of the best competition for international schools in Asia with teams from Korea, Japan and the Phillipines taking part. We plan to do what we do best; run, compete and win or lose play with class.
The SCIS Ladies Varsity Basketball team has been working hard to hone their skills in order to compete at the ACAMIS tournament on Feb. 28-30th at QSI in Shenzhen. The stiff competition found in Pudong has helped them to prepare for this end of the year tournament. The girls have shown improvement throughout the season as well as positive attitudes as they handle injury, illness, and learning to work together with new team mates. This 2009-2010 team will continue the dragon tradition of playing good basketball, but more importantly conducting themselves with class and good sportsmanship.
Shenzen beware! The SCIS boys D2 basketball team is headed to this year’s ACAMIS tournament feeling good and hungry for a title. Over the past few weeks I have had the great pleasure of getting to know this team of outstanding young men and preparing for the final games and tournaments of the season. A mid-year coaching change is never an easy obstacle for a team to overcome, but I have been extremely impressed with the way this team has responded. Since our return from the holiday, the teamwork, sportsmanship, and drive on display has been nothing short of outstanding. Over the next few weeks we will continue key preparations in the areas of ball control and limiting turnovers, as well as breaking the press and execution of the offense. I am privileged to be joining the team as we move into this exciting part of the season.
Next Thursday January 28th players and coaches will be traveling to Shenzen to compete in the ACAMIS basketball tournament. The link below contains further information about the trip. ACAMIS QSI 2010final letter
This weekend all of the Dragon Basketball teams travelled to Hangzhou for the Intra-School Dragon Cup tournament. The three Dragon Cup events follow the varsity sports schedule and allow our SCIS/HIS student athletes to bond with fellow competitors from our other campuses.
HIS were gracious hosts and had two gymnasiums ready for games along with providing hot meals for the athletes. All of the schools finished the tournament with identical 4win/4 loss records – one of the closest Dragon Cup competitions to date. This is a testament to the growth and development of all our programs. Your SCIS Pd Dragons brought home the ‘actual’ Dragon Cup victory due to our 4 win and 0 loss Varsity record.
Our girls J.V. squad lost both their games at the tournament – but showed much growth and development. Mariana led the way with some key baskets and a healthy Emmi was a force on defense blocking shots.
The boys J.V. also came home from Hangzhou without a win. Coach Wilson’s team was in tough with two regular starters not making the trip. New-comer Chi Hang made an immediate impact with his knowledgeable game while Luke Simmons provided a serious inside presence. This team continues to improve and should be a force at the end of the season.
At the varsity level the girls won both their games. SCIS Pd had a real battle with Hongqiao – going into overtime before finally emerging victorious. The girls are becoming much more aggressive and the vaunted SCIS Pd press is rounding into form. Kaitlyn Wamsteeker had a tremendous tournament in the post – regularly outplaying bigger opponents, while Azusa and Tiffany provided much needed energy from the bench.
The varsity boys are continuing to adjust after losing senior starter Dickson Tsai to injury. Most impressive for the boys this weekend was their defense as they had almost six quarters of basketball where they held the opponent to 5 points or less (including a few quarters where the other team didn’t score at all). Garret Williams had some of his best games as a Dragon – especially on the defensive end of the floor. Ben Smytka continued to provide stalwart play in the middle, both as a rebounder and a scorer. Finally Sean Odell is quickly becoming an integral part of the team as a disciplined and energetic 6th man.
On Friday the D1 Boys and Girls made a quick trip to BISS for Varsity games .
Varsity Girls: First League Win
This years version of the Lady Dragons got their first taste of SISAC triumph on November 27th. In a hotly contested defensive affair the Dragons prevailed 28-24. The Dragon’s upgraded their defensive intensity led by Kaitlyn’s blocking and Julia’s steals helped seal the win.
D1 Boys Varsity: A Win By Any Name Is Still A Win
It wasn’t pretty, but the boys dealt with the loss of starting center Dickson Tsai to injury by winning their third consecutive SISAC league game by the score of 46-35. The change in personnel definitely hurt our offense, as did the state of the BISS court as well. The boys are looking forward to meeting the only other undefeated team in SISAC – DCS – this Friday at ‘The Lair’.
