Exercise is medicine! Ni Hao, my name is Tarsi Bali, and I am excited to join SCIS PD as both the Aquatics Coordinator, and Physical Education Teacher for grades PK-5. Since I could remember, exercise, nutrition, and optimum wellness, have always been of great interest to me. Now as an educator, I want to help guide students to become healthier and happier, inspiring them to be physical active for life. My passion for fitness and health led me to initially pursue a career in research and academia. Before arriving in Shanghai, I was conducting experimental research in Slovenia, working at the Jozef Stefan Research Institute. I’m here at SCIS with my husband Steven Sgourdos, who teaches in the middle school. In my free time, I love swimming, horseback riding, and traveling around Greece on my motorcycle. I hold a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Sports Science from the University of Athens, Greece, a Master in Fitness and Health from the University of Essex, UK, and a PhD in Sport and Exercise Science from the University of Essex.

Greetings SCIS! My name is Vic Caban (aka Coach Vic) and I am honored to be a member of the SCIS team. As an Athletic Director, Physical Education teacher and IB MYP workshop leader, I look forward to sharing my experiences in each of these areas as well as learning from the high quality staff already in place. My wife, our two children, and I are thrilled about returning to China having lived and worked in Beijing from 2011-2014. We have also had the privilege of working in Cairo, Egypt as well as Costa Rica. Needless to say we love to travel, explore, and experience, but look forward to making Shanghai our long-term home. Some of my personal interests include competing in triathlons; reading, researching and sharing the latest brain research and its role in the classroom; following EPL soccer and NCAA basketball; spending time with my family; and cheering on my kids in their own endeavors.

I’m thrilled to return to SCIS Pudong after over twenty years in international education. The youngest of six boys, I was raised in Winona, Minnesota. However, I now call the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Hendersonville, NC home. My bachelor’s degree in history and secondary education was earned from Valparaiso University in Indiana. It was then, I set off on this unique journey of international teaching in Cairo Egypt where I met my wife Laurie at the American International School of Egypt. While working at the Kaohsiung American School in Taiwan, I earned an MA in Educational Administration. After Taiwan, we joined the SCIS community as the founding faculty in Hangzhou (2002) before moving to SCIS Pudong in 2004-08. Having spent the last eight years at the American International School of Budapest (Hungary), Laurie and I are excited to be back as SCIS Dragons. We are joined by our three daughters Ella, Elise, and Mei Lee who spent many of their formative years with SCIS. As a parent, I am grateful my own children were shaped by the SCIS experience; professionally, I am humbled to be serving students by leading such a dynamic school community.

Hello SCIS community! I am from Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA. I am passionate about helping students learn how to find and use information and resources so they can thrive as lifelong learners. I received a B.A. from Brown University in Business Economics and an M.B.A and a J.D. from the University of New Mexico. In my experience as an educator, lawyer, and financial officer I have developed a love for identifying, analyzing and applying new information. I am motivated to help students develop these skills and communicate their learning. I previously taught IB Business, IB Spanish, IB English B and ESOL in Beijing and then taught IB History, Economics, and Government in New Mexico. When I’m not reading, I love learning languages and participating in performing arts. I play guitar and sing, I dance, and I enjoy being behind the scenes in the theater. I am delighted to be a part of the SCIS community!
