  • Matt Astrom
    University of Pennsylvania
    High School Social Studies Teacher
    Hongqiao Upper School
For as long as I can remember, I have had in me a bit of wanderlust and the desire to experience the world outside of the United States. When the time was right, I jumped at the chance, bringing my two boys with me to experience life overseas. After two years at Cairo American College, we now call Shanghai home. With fifteen years of teaching experience and a master’s degree in Curriculum Design and Instruction, I attempt at every turn to find better ways to use individual learning styles and technological advancements in my classroom to make students active participants in their learning. I attempt to turn students into active learners who discover, explore, and connect to learning more effectively. When I am not teaching or playing with my boys, I enjoy playing baseball, softball and golf. That is, of course, when I am not watching American football!

After getting a bachelor’s degree in physics in the chilly city of Rochester, New York I started teaching outside of San Antonio, in my home state of Texas. Shortly after, I discovered the thrills and rewards of international education and am arriving in Shanghai after teaching in Taiwan, Tanzania, and most recently Brazil. Hongqiao Upper School
Hello SCIS community! My wife, our two-year-old son, Jack Zando, and our 15-year-old Chihuahua, Alfred Sigfred Wilfred, have come from Seoul, South Korea where we taught at an international school for three years. Prior to Seoul, we lived and worked (and climbed, surfed and biked!) in New Zealand, the U.K., and the U.S. (I’m from Asheville, North Carolina). We decided it was high time to experience another East Asian mega city and are excited about being part of such a positive school community. I’m particularly excited about working in the middle school humanities department. Learning about humans, and how and why we’re here, is a passion of mine. Working in an international setting as a humanities teacher is amazing as so many perspectives and opinions are on display. I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Asheville with a degree in history and education, and I am just about finished with my masters’ degree in educational leadership from the University of Northern Iowa. The human condition is a fascinating one and I look forward to learning alongside all of you!

  • Ben Dunbar
    University of Arkansas
    IB English Teacher
    Hongqiao Upper School
I am a third generation teacher who is passionate about both my subject and, more importantly, its extrapolatory benefits for students. Skills of analysis and articulation apply to any field or career, and they are founded upon concepts of comprehension and communication. That these skills can be developed through a broad range of texts from song lyrics, political speeches, Nike advertisements, Shakespearean plays, Romantic poetry, or even the front page is what keeps the class from ever becoming stagnant or boring! I attended private preparatory schools in Arkansas, matriculating to university study where I received a BA in English and a Master’s in the Art of Teaching. My Peace Corps service in Turkmenistan instilled a commitment to cross-cultural understanding and educational development, further strengthened by four years of managing US State Department teacher-exchange programs through a DC-based NGO. In my 12 year-teaching career in the US, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia, I’ve taught an array of courses from AP Comp and Lit to IGCSE English and IB Language and Literature. In the summers, I reside in Bozeman, Montana with my wife Jessica and our newborn daughter Mackenzie, filling my time with as much hiking, distance running, and ultimate frisbee as possible!

I am excited to be part of the SCIS educational community and am looking forward to my third year serving this dynamic and culturally-diverse community. As the SCIS Middle School Counselor, I believe in a strengths-based approach that recognizes the uniqueness of each student. Originally from Minnesota in the United States, I have traveled the globe extensively and have lived/worked in Lao PDR, Colombia and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia before calling China home.  As an English-speaking native, I am also fluent in Spanish, French and conversant in Arabic and Mandarin.  In my free time, I enjoy yoga, swimming and biking, hiking/camping as well as photography, dancing, playing guitar and singing.
