I am excited to join the SCIS community and share my love of science and learning with our middle school students. Originally from Australia’s southernmost island Tasmania I consider myself fortunate to have taught Science and Mathematics in Australia, Sweden, Thailand and now China. I completed my Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Teaching at the University of Melbourne and hope to soon complete my Master of Multidisciplinary Studies at Buffalo State. I have a great belief in the capacity and innate curiosity of developing learners and continue to be amazed at the innovative ideas and rich understandings that come from providing them with the time and space to pursue their own interests. I look forward to the year ahead and to exploring Shanghai and China with my wife, Jules and our young son, Kit.

Hola! I am from El Salvador but spent most of my childhood in the USA. Although my mother tongue is Spanish I generally sound American. I returned to El Salvador 10 years later in the midst of civil war. I completed high school and university in El Salvador, married and left the country again. I miss my hometown but I would miss living abroad even more, as do many third culture kids. I have taught everything from kindergarten to grade 12, but I am a lower elementary teacher at heart. I have always had a passion for art and crafts and I usually have a couple of projects on the go at any one time. I have an interest in Chinese craft techniques. My husband teaches science in secondary and our son studies at HIS. We enjoy traveling to different countries. I feel fortunate to have visited many authentic and unspoiled spots around the world like the Mosquitia region in Honduras, Sierra Nevada in Colombia and Lake Khovsgul in Mongolia. After we left El Salvador we taught for two years in Mongolia followed by five years teaching in Sudan. Both countries are well known for their extreme weather and barren landscapes, so my heart leapt when I heard that Hangzhou enjoys four seasons and is one of the most beautiful cities in China. It is exciting to be part of the HIS community and experiencing the rich Chinese culture.

I love my home city of Bristol in the UK, but the draw of other cultures and my passion for wildlife has kept me away for many years. I spent nine wonderful years in El Salvador, two more in Mongolia and five in Sudan. I teach Science with a specialism in Biology and Environmental Systems, and I am a strong believer in a practical hands-on approach to science, as this builds skills and improves learning through inquiry, while also making the lessons much more fun and interesting. I have been a naturalist since I was six years old and it has remained a passion throughout my life. I work as an amateur ornithologist, and I try to conduct research on little-known bird species in any country where I live: something I hope to continue around Zhejiang province. I have been a keen amateur boxer on and off for more than 30 years, though I am now too old to compete. My son is in lower school and my wife Veronica teaches in Pre-School.
  • Tanya Jensen
    University of New Brunswick
    Grade 1 Teacher
    Hangzhou International School
My name is Tanya Jensen, and I came to Hangzhou from Nova Scotia, Canada. This will be my second year teaching at HIS and my second year teaching internationally. I have taught various grade levels since completing my Bachelor of Education degree at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, NB in 2010. Just before accepting this exciting position with HIS, I had begun working at the Atlantic Provinces Special Education Authority and had the opportunity to work with students who were blind or visually impaired or deaf or hard of hearing. The experience taught me that there are some lessons and experiences that we sometimes take for granted. Therefore, it is important, as educators, to check for a deeper understanding by questioning our students and by helping them to become responsible for their own learning. Outside the classroom, I enjoy traveling, listening to music and taking pictures. I was fortunate to have had the amazing opportunity to travel throughout China this past summer and to Thailand this past spring. I continue to be excited about being immersed in a brand new culture, while having the opportunity to learn about other cultures from the students in my class. I look forward to another rewarding year as a member of the HIS community!

Hello! My name is Tiffany Johnson and I am very excited to be teaching third grade at SCIS. My teaching experience in the primary grades spans two decades and three countries. I’ve taught in blustery Minnesota, tropical Indonesia, and now a happy medium in Shanghai. The timing of earning my Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction was perfect; a month prior to the birth of our first daughter, Isabelle. Sophie came along just a year later to make our family complete. My husband, Barry, is the Upper School Technology Coordinator. On the weekends, you can find the Johnson family exploring and photographing the sights, blogging, biking, reading, and enjoying a Friday night movie. We are thrilled to be part of the SCIS-Pudong community and anticipate a great year of teaching and learning.

Greetings! My name is Barry Johnson, and I am excited to be part of the SCIS Pudong Upper School campus. Before moving to Shanghai, I spent 5 years teaching in the lush tropics of Sumatra, Indonesia where I taught music, mathematics to grades three and five, and technology, in addition to coaching teachers on effective integration of technology into their curriculum. I appreciate the personal and professional challenges that come with living and working abroad, and find the experience rewarding. Our family loves to explore new places and is thrilled at the opportunities that lie ahead in Shanghai and other areas of China. In a country teeming with history and culture, our camera and blog are sure to be busy! My free time consists of a variety of interests such as: reading, golfing, biking, running, and playing Ultimate Frisbee. I’m looking forward to an exiting year at SCIS and seeing what creative and innovative ideas our middle and high school students come up with!
