It will be exciting to learn about different cultures within my classroom and the school. I'm excited to share my teaching and my culture with the students at HIS. I believe that every child can learn when given the opportunity to do so. It's very important to me to build strong relationships with my students and their parents. I believe that building relationships is the foundation for learning that ensures the year will be successful. In my free time I enjoy taking walks, playing recreational volleyball, traveling, sewing, crafts, and volunteering in the community. Being immersed in a new environment seems exciting and a great learning experience for myself personally and professionally. I look forward to the adventure that begins in August!

I grew up on a farm in Ermelo, South Africa and am proudly South African. Prior to HIS, I was an Elementary PE teacher for several years at the American International School of Johannesburg in South Africa. I have also been a trainer at four-week Adventure Boot Camp for Women. I value the opportunity to teach both youngsters and adults during my career. Sport has always been part of my life, I have fond memories of the sports played in the backyard. I had the privilege to tour Australia with my varsity field hockey team and to coach hockey in university. Sports introduced me to many people, cities, challenges and achievements., and my experience taught me the value of sportsmanship and team spirit, striving to achieve one's goals and to accept one's teammates, regardless of their religion, race or ability. It shaped me into the individual and educator I am today. By becoming a teacher, I combined my passion for teaching children and sport, while making a difference in children's lives. I believe learning best takes place in a relaxed environment where students feel free to laugh and have fun. I strive to promote lifelong fitness, health and an active lifestyle to my students. I love the outdoors, playing squash and socializing with loved ones and friends. I am passionate about traveling, exploring new cultures and cities and meeting new people. Finally, as a South African I am a huge Springbok rugby and Protea cricket supporter.

I am originally from the United States, but I have called China my home for the last decade. I have continued my life-long learning with a Master’s Degree from SUNY Buffalo State and am currently working on an Ed.D. through Nova Southeastern in Instructional Leadership. I began teaching English and coaching girls’ soccer at the club team, high school varsity level, and Olympic Development level in Oklahoma before coming to China the first time on a Freeman Foundation grant. Following that introduction to China, I returned for two more years, working as an exchange program teacher in Anhui and Henan provinces for the National Committee on US China Exchange program.   I first joined the SCIS-HIS community in 2008 as an Upper School English teacher at the Hongqiao campus. During my tenure in Shanghai, I was at various times a teacher, CAS Coordinator, Grade Level Leader, Student Council Advisor, IB Diploma Programme Coordinator, and High School Vice Principal.
