Hi SCIS! I am originally from Northern Virginia, outside of Washington DC and I have been teaching for 11 years in Southeast Asia as well as in Central and South America. I love that teaching these subjects allows me to better know and connect with my students. I am thrilled to work with and learn from such a diverse group of students here at SCIS. In addition to teaching, I also love sports and have been coaching some combination of rugby, soccer and track everywhere I’ve taught. I am excited about becoming a dragon and can’t wait to work with such a passionate faculty. I’m also an avid hiker and love kayaking and am excited to be back in Asia and am looking forward to outdoor adventures and exploring this beautiful region.

    Murdoch University Western Australia
    Lower School Principal
    Hangzhou International School
I started my teaching career in 1991 after graduating from Murdoch University in Western Australia. I first became a School Principal in 1998. Since that time, I have been a Director, Head of School or principal in 7 different schools. These have ranged from elementary schools with 150 students to international schools with 6 000 students. While I enjoy working with students of all ages, my passion and focus for my Masters of Education study has been in the area of Early Childhood Education. Having spent most of my early career teaching older children, it is refreshing and rewarding to work so closely with younger children. It was not until I had children of my own that I truly appreciated the very special needs and requirements for students in these crucial early years of education. As a father of 2 young boys, I am now very conscious of not only the needs of the children but also the needs and concerns that parents experience during these important early years of education. As a father, I appreciate the agonizing decision that parents have to make when selecting a school for their child. While this is always a personal choice, I have realized that choosing a school that teaches and encourages care, compassion and strong family values is important. Choosing a school that looks to expand the minds of children and encourages them to seek their own place in the world and have the courage to asks questions is important and choosing a school that wants to educate the ‘whole child’ and not just focus on academic results is important. These are the qualities that I believe will allow children to grow up with the skills and values to tackle whatever comes their way and do it with courage, dignity and integrity. These are very much the qualities that Hangzhou International School encourages and are the reason that I was so excited to come take up the position of the Lower School Principal. I have worked in a variety of schools across all age levels and it is this diversity that I have experienced in these different settings that has shaped the way that I think about education and how I go about finding the best ways to deliver an educational program that caters for all students. I am very excited to be part of the Hangzhou International School family and I look forward to continuing to work with the students staff and parents to develop the programs that we offer at our school.

Originally from Dublin, Ireland, I've worked at SCIS since 2012 and moving to Shanghai was a little bit like returning home for me. I spent most of my childhood growing up in different parts of Asia, from Bahrain to Malaysia to China, attending international schools just like SCIS. I eventually ended up in the United States for university, where I spent five years in Boston, MA. I’m a big sports fan, especially of soccer and basketball, both of which I enjoy playing and coaching. I also love traveling and listening to all sorts of music. I am fortunate enough to have one of the more unique teaching combinations at SCIS: IB Film and IB Economics. They are both extremely exciting and rewarding courses. Whether or not you are lucky enough to take Film and/or Economics, I look forward to meeting and working with you all.

This is my first year at SCIS and I am excited to be joining the Grade 2 team. I returned to Canada to complete my Master of Education at Queen’s University and to teach in my home city of Ottawa, Canada. Physical Education
    Hongqiao Lower School
I was born and raised in Winona Minnesota, which is nestled along side of the Mississippi River about 100 miles south of Minneapolis. I attended Cotter High School, which is also where I started my teaching career in 2002 after graduating from Winona State University. Athletics have always been important to me. I competed in football, basketball and baseball in high school and went on to play baseball and football in college. My enjoyment of physical activities helped guide may path into teaching Physical / Health Education and also coaching. I have coached football, basketball and baseball at the varsity. I had the honor of coaching in two Minnesota State High School Baseball Tournaments and being named Section Coach of the Year twice. My passion for youth sports led me to pursue a graduate degree with a focus on youth sports, which I completed from the University of Minnesota in January of 2014. My main goal as a Physical / Health Educator is to help guide students to take ownership for their own health and well-being (physical, mental, emotional). It’s very rewarding as a teacher when I see this happen. Another goal of mine is that students would be devoted to a lifetime of physical activity. When I am not at school working with students I enjoy working out, playing golf, spending time with my family, reading and listening to music. I am excited to continue teaching, coaching, learning and growing here at SCIS. I am here with my wife, Kristie O’Brien, and two children Alana (8th grade) and Moses (1st grade). We have enjoyed learning and exploring Shanghai together and we look forward to a great school year!
