Learn as if you were to live forever.” Born in Kandy, Sri Lanka and graduating from high school in Vancouver, BC, I then went to Walla Walla College, in College Place, WA, where I majored in Physical Education. After teaching a few years in the United States, I moved back to Vancouver and received my TESOL Diploma. I, then, moved to Brazil where I spent the last 12 years teaching ESL, 5th Grade, and for the last five years, 7th Grade English and History/Geography.  While there, I also completed a Master’s in International Teaching from Framingham College. I love music, sports, and am a self-proclaimed foodie.
  • Michael Razzari
    Drexel University
    MS Social Studies, ESOL
    Hongqiao Upper School
Greetings! My name is Mike Razzari, and this is my first year at SCIS. I come from a small town (Escalon) in Northern California, but am very much a city slicker now, having previously taught ESL in Incheon/Seoul, South Korea for five years. My undergraduate work was completed at California State University Sacramento in 2008, and I recently received my teaching credential and Masters in education through Drexel University. Because the majority of my experience in education has been as an ESL teacher, I will be working with ESOL students this year. My teaching philosophy is geared towards critical pedagogy, and student-centered education, influenced heavily by the ideas of Paulo Freire and Tina Igoa. I’m looking forward to having a great year at SCIS.
  • Brianna Riani
    University of Central Florida
    Grade 2 Teacher
    Hangzhou International School
I knew pretty early in my life that I had a knack for teaching others and a love for children, so I decided to become an elementary school teacher. Ever since then, I could not be happier with my chosen path. Being born and raised in tropical Florida, I have learned to appreciate the outdoors and all the beauty our world has to offer. Having access to nature and animals truly makes my heart happy. I feel at home being on or near the water. For fun, I enjoy kayaking, swimming, and exploring new sights. Being a lifetime learner is something I think everyone should strive to be. I think that every moment is a learning experience and that each day we should be creating better versions of ourselves. I believe in every child. Each child has their own unique qualities and abilities that help them be great. At school, it is important that each person, little or big, plays a role in the classroom community. Children should be excited to go to school because they know they will face a new challenge and will have the learned skills and support to accomplish anything.

George Mason University & The George Washington University
    Student Support Services Coordinator
    Hangzhou International School
I am a native of Washington DC. I have been in the field of Education my entire career.  I went from teaching in K-12 classrooms to teaching graduate students at George Mason University. On sabbatical I founded two public charter schools in DC. The elementary school is an IB World School that focuses on Mandarin immersion. The secondary school is also an IB World School that offers partial immersion in Mandarin, Spanish, and French.   My greatest pleasures are spending time with my daughter (who was born in China) reading, and traveling internationally. I’ve traveled to China several times for work and pleasure (including Hangzhou), and am so excited to finally realize my dream of teaching and living in China.  I love to watch children explore other cultures and see how it inspires them to become more linguistically and culturally competent. I am a passionate believer in internationalism, environmental stewardship, social justice, and inclusive education. I also believe in the power of project and inquiry-based learning to help students develop their passions and interests.
