My name is Austin Wellman and I come to you from the rolling farm fields of southeastern Minnesota, USA. I grew up on the corner of my grandparents’ farm as the second of five children, surrounded by cousins, aunts, uncles, and all sorts of extended family. I graduated from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities with a Bachelor of Arts in communication studies and a minor in music on the trombone. Marching band, concert bands, jazz and choral ensembles occupied much of my time through school and still are a passion of mine today. After college, I began work toward my teaching license at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota while simultaneously working full time at Lionsgate Academy in Crystal, Minnesota as a special education assistant. Upon completion of my certification, I moved to Kuwait to work at the American International School Kuwait as a 2nd grade teacher, where I fell in love with the international lifestyle. In December 2015, I graduated with a Master of Arts in Teaching from Hamline University. My masters capstone research gathered a collection of teachers’ music backgrounds and investigated how music involvement might impact teaching and the school community. I began my teaching adventure at SCIS Hongqiao in the fall of 2015 and have loved teaching 4th grade with my dynamic dream team ever since. I invite you to join in on my tradition of wearing a bow tie on what I call "Top Tier Tuesdays" and also invite you to play your trombone on “Trombone Fridays."

  • Aryanna Wetteland
    University of California – Irvine
    Grade 3 Teacher
    Hangzhou International School
I am from California and have lived and taught in China for the past two years. This provides me with a unique perspective on living abroad and the Chinese school system. I have always been interested in teaching from a young age, in middle and high school I tutored my peers for fun, then in college I joined the AVID program at local high schools, tutoring in a variety of subjects. After I graduated college at the University of California, Irvine, I became an Admissions counselor at Ashford University. I enjoyed most aspects of the admissions process for young adults but I felt I was missing something from my career. I decided to go back to school and acquire my teaching credential and Masters in Education from National University. As soon as I was in the classroom I knew that was where I belonged. I know teaching is where I can really make a difference. Each class has its own personality and inspires me to think outside of the box. I love seeing the light bulb click as a child realizes they are an intelligent capable person. I believe that education is the key to success. In my free time I like to read, swim, travel, and hike. I enjoy the opportunity to contribute to HIS and be part of such a positive team.

As a practicing artist and teacher, I can’t wait to explore the contemporary art scene in this fine city.
