On Tuesday, September 7 at 6:30 here at the upper school, we will host an important meeting for parents and students in grades 11 and 12. Topics of discussion will include college admissions and the IB program. With respect to the latter, assessment and evaluation in the IB will be the focus and we will also touch on CAS and the extended essay. We encourage as many parents and students as possible to attend.

Back to School Night will be held on Thursday, September 2nd at 6:30 pm in the Gym. We are looking forward to seeing everyone there.
All parents of upper school students are invited to attend our Back to School Night on Tuesday, August 31, beginning at 6:30 in the Black Box. This is a parent only event where you can hear of developments at the school, meet teachers, learn about class plans and see the school now that it’s up and running for the year. We hope to see everyone there!
Note also that the warehouse will be selling clothing tonight, in case parents were not able to purchase what they needed earlier.
The Hawaii Army Band traveling to Shanghai to perform at the World Expo are making a stop at SCIS Hongqiao campus on Sept. 6. We will be transporting our Middle School students in the morning to make the 9:00 am performance. The majority of the students will return to the Pudong campus at the end of the show at 10:00 am. The High School and MS Intermediate Band members will stay for a special workshop by the Army Band for each student’s respective instrument, woodwind, brass, or percussion. The permission slip for this is being sent home with students today and must be returned by the end of next week.
Everyone is very excited about the kickoff of the IB Diploma program in the High School. Preparation for the program will begin in the Middle School. To prepare students for the various elements of the IB and, more importantly, to help them discover their strengths outside of academia, all Middle School students are required to participate in at least one co-curricular activity per semester. This may include any program or club that meets outside of class time such as the arts (jazz band, drama production, after school choir, art club, guitar club, etc.), sports (volleyball, badminton, touch rugby, etc.), service (student council, MUN, global issues network, etc.) or other options that can be created upon request. There are many, many choices available for the middle school students.
The new Middle School Survival Guide and the SCIS Parents’ Field Guide to Middle Schoolers have both been posted on this website. Please see the right-hand column under the section “Documents” to find them. They are a great resource to help with typical adolescent issues and how parents can help guide their kids through these. Also, it is essential to read the sections concerning computer usage as it is required for all Middle School students and must be done before new students are issued their laptops.
New Student Orientation takes place in both the Lower School and Upper School Friday, August 20 from 12:00 to 3:00. There will be a Lower School presentation to new parents beginning at 12:00 in the commons and in the Upper School beginning at 2:00 in the cafeteria. All new SCIS families are welcome to join us.
Our end of year awards assembly takes place in the Black Box beginning at 12:30 this Wednesday. Honour roll students, eighth grade movng on to high school and numerous award winners will be recognized. Please join us if you can as we celebrate a year of achievements.
